Outrageous adventure in Cleopatran Paris

Occult vision of Paris inspired by Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt in 1798 and Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb. The former led to the Rosetta stone, Zodiac of Dendera and the Sacred Ibis. Carter’s discovery to a mania for everything Egyptian in movies, art, fashion and even furniture design. I love the idea of a comedy adventure in a ‘Cleopatran’ Paris. The capital of a Napoleonic empire dominated by Egyptian stele, lurking things in the sewers under the cobblestone streets, occult bookshops and an abandoned cartload of sarcophagi.

Bombed out Tokyo 1946

Kasutori noir meltdown

A glamorous model poses on a ledge against the mean streets of a bombed-out Tokyo. The photo captures the essence of kayodatsu and kasutori that sprang up in defeated Japan.

Kayodatsu was the culture of post-war despair. Kasutori the nihilism, crime, drugs and violence that came out of it and grabbed urban society by the throat. The black market, street gangs, pulp literature and sleazy sex. Kasutori was led by decadent bohemians drinking and screwing themselves to death. Its name came from the sake dregs – kasu – that fuelled it. But the most notorious booze was the bakudan ‘bomb’, a lethal cocktail made with methyl alcohol.

Blindness and death.

Kasutori inspired the absurd violence, sleaze and nihilism that runs through Man in a Zen Ambulance.

Elvis and early rock and roll provide the hot licks.
